Wear your correct number/tag
With cyclo-cross being such a great family sport we often get mums, dads, their kids, boyfriends and girlfriends all taking part in our races, and this is a lovely lovely thing.

So, if you have a family member taking part can you please check to make sure that you are NOT WEARING THEIR NUMBER!

At the Bethlem, we had seven pairs of riders who were wearing the wrong numbers, in every race from U10 up to Vet50+.

The best way to check is to make sure the number on your helmet chip matches your back number.

The two other ways you can help the timekeepers is firstly to make sure your race number is in your kitbag before you leave home, and secondly to scan your helmet AND sign the signon sheet, even if you paid online.

Yes it sounds obvious but every error significantly slows down the production of results. Much appreciated, thanks!

There will no cash prizes awarded at any LCCA sanctioned event.

Lost Cyclo-Cross Courses
The London Cyclo-Cross association came into being in the 1950’s and a league has run ever since, although in the 2000’s we added ‘South East’ to the League title as many races are not actually held in London.

Over that time we have raced across London and the South East and we have listed 70 plus lost courses – https://cyclesport.london/lost-cyclo-cross-courses/

Mark Leedham
The London Cyclo-Cross Association is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mark Leedham.

mark12016

Mark was the LCCA’s secretary, a cross and track commissaries and a wonderful man to know.

He raced with a smile on his face and organised both track and cross events with aplomb. He was the hand on the tiller at the Addiscombec CC cross race at Penshurst and the Addiscombe Open Track Meeting at Herne Hill.

I personally spent a lot of time with Mark and I like so many others are deeply shocked at his passing.

I and the LCCA wish to expres our condolences to Mark’s family and friends.

Special General Meeting Monday April 4 – quick report
Huge thanks to Evans Cycles and Stuart McGhee for hosting the LCCA once more.

In a nutshell – there will be a separate combined race for veteran 50 men and all women race categories.

The race programme will begin at 10AM (times to be confirmed)-

Under 10s
Under 12
Youth
Veteran Men 50/All women
Veteran Men 40 Men
Senior/Junior Men.

Women will start 2 minutes behind the veteran 50 men.

This means a longer working day for organisers, comm’s and marshals but the present situation of large fields in the combined veteran men 40/50 and women’s race was not sustainable. If we had kept the system used for some years now we would have had to impose stringent limits to that race.

We also discussed course design and new leagues in what was an excellent discussion. Thanks to all who attended.

More to follow etc.

At the request of the AGM, a Special General Meeting will be held on Monday April 4 19:00 at:

Evans Cycles, Camino Park, James Watt Way, Crawley, West Sussex, RH10 9TZ.

Full 2016 minutes download Word doc – Go Get

We will discuss the following items:

1. Season Length.
2. Course design.
3. The growth of new leagues.
4. Women’s races.
5. Number and timing of events
6. Gridding

We can discuss these and not in the order as stated. Below is simply a personal round up of the issues to help thinking and decision making.

  1. Season Length. (general discussion)

The 2015/16 season began on the first Sunday of September and ran though until Sunday February 7 2016. During this time we held 15 rounds of the London/SE League and there was a regional championship. One race was cancelled and one was not run as fully as normal. Most weekends we were racing and during the week working to promote and put in place matters required by BC etc.

Is this too long a season? Should we refrain from having more rounds and should we endeavour to see the season over in January. Maybe one round post the National Championships and the team champs?

2. Course design. (general discussion)

The growth in the number of riders at events means we need to have a think about what type of courses we see designed.

The biggest race was the Veteran/Women’s which saw fields varying fields between 100 and 140 at each event with a peak at 143 at the Sussex Show Ground, of this number 25 were women and 35 veteran men 50+.

It was only a few years back that many courses contained much single track and we need to avoid this so as to not cause stupid bottlenecks or dangerous pinch points. In addition as BC become ever greater concerned by risk assessment and management we also must take heed. For instance not only are we obliged to race on courses that meet regulation but we also need to understand what risk assessment means other than not taking a course through a lion pen or dig bomb holes to create ‘excitement’. The use of florid course descriptions such as suicide corner or the leap of doom might see innocent until a barrister in a court of law twists it to suit his/her cause.

3. The growth of new leagues. (general discussion)

The current LCCA website is dominated by the London/South East League reflecting that this was the only thing in town other than one or two races such as the Rapha Supercross and the defunct Muddy Hell races held in our region.

The LCCA region covers London (which we share with Eastern and Central Regions), Kent, Surrey and Sussex and we are bordered by the Wessex, Central and Eastern Regions.

In the past few years a London Summer Series has been held that although held under our auspices was seen as a separate organisation and which promoted outside the cyclo-cross season. Recently a new East Kent League has seen its first season of competition and as the LCCA has never thwarted the idea of new leagues (unlike other regions) there maybe others who also wish to promote more localised leagues.

So how does the idea and reality of new leagues affect the London/SE League? Should we care? Should the London/SE League be protected? Does it matter? What about fixture conflict? Can two leagues draw enough riders if held on the same day? These are just a few challenges we may want to discuss.

4. Women’s races. (for decision)

The growth of the women’s race is a fundamental positive for the league and now it is time to see how we can enhance and grow it even more.

Over the last few seasons coupled with a general growth of women in sport (and cycling in general) we have seen grids grow from a handful of riders to a good number.

There has been a really good discussion on the London/SE Cross League Facebook page and elsewhere about the veteran/women’s races which saw fields varying fields between 100 and 140 at each event with a peak at 143 at the Sussex Show Ground, of this number 25 were women and 35 veteran men 50+.

The same race saw 61 riders in the senior/junior men’s race and 35 in the youth event.

So should we split the women off from the veteran men? Or hold an all women/veteran men 50+ race or even a novice race to take the pressure of what could be an untenable growth in the present veteran40/50 and all women combined race?

Whatever we decide we should make sure that there is a 20 minute gap between the youth and all seniors’ races.

London/SE
Racing start at 10.30am with the Under 10’s then the under 12s, youth, V/W and ending with the senior/Junior men at 2pm. That is four and half hours of racing and when you add course set up and course de-construction that means a long day. Most organisers and comm’s are at the venue at an early hour and then leave much later. The winter months mean that day light is short and organisers should be able to take down courses whilst there is still light.

Under 10 – 10:30am (10 minute race)
Under 12  – 10:45am (15 minute race)
Youth – 11:15 (30 minute race)
Veteran Men 40+ –  12:30  (45/50 minute race)

5. Number and timing of events (for decision)

This is of course dependent on 4.

6. Gridding. (for decision)

Do want to review how we grid? Presently the higher you are in the rankings the higher your grid position. We do bring some riders forward for safety and sporting reasons.

LCCA 2016 AGM; Monday March 7 2016
AGM quick update – We held the AGM last night and thanks to Evans Gatwick for hosting it.

With quite a lot of house keeping to be done such as the election of officers etc. it was decided that a special meeting would be called very soon to allow a proper discussion about a number of issues.

This will be on a weekend at Evans of Gatwick at a date to be decided.

The issues to be discussed include:
The high number of riders in the veteran 40/50 men and women’s race.
New leagues and their relationship with the London/SE League.
Season length.
Course design and risk assessment.

Strada Wheels London and South East Cyclo-Cross League Rider of the Season 2015/16

lx3201516e

The winner of a pair of hand built cyclo-cross wheels and the London and South East Cyclo-Cross League RIDER OF THE 2015/16 SEASON is Laura Greenhalgh.

Laura has faced some excellent opposition over the season but she was able to stay ahead to win the London and South East Cyclo-Cross League women’s title with a mix of power, humour, riding skills, determination and when she wasn’t racing she could be found in the pits helping her team mates.

Strada Hand Built Wheels have been supplying hand built wheels for five years from their workshop in Worthing, Sussex. After the frame, the wheel of your bike is the most critical component in how it rides and handles so we consider your weight, height, physique, power, type of bike before selecting a rim, hub and spokes to build a wheelset to match you perfectly.

They can supply clincher, tubeless and tubular cyclo-cross wheels in rim or disc brake configurations for the 2015 season hand built with quality components and personal customer service.

Laura will be able to be fussy as she likes as Strada work their magic to provide her with a pair of great hand built wheels.

2016/17 Race Format Changes – Discuss
There has been a really good discussion on Beth’s Facebook page inspired by her blog about the 2015/16 season. I asked her about the women’s race and how we could improve it and this saw some really good comments made. Now I want to put it out there to others and we can then discuss it at the AGM on March 7 (scroll down page for info).

The veteran/women’s race saw fields of the London/SE League saw varying fields between 100 and 140 at each event with a peak at 143 at the Sussex Show Ground, of this number 25 were women and 35 veteran men 50+.

The same race saw 61 riders in the senior/junior men’s race and 35 in the youth event.

Looking back at the 2015/16 season I feel quite happy, we had our rocky moments but in general all went well. Racing on the main youth/senior course was not possible for reasons of safety namely sections of barbed wire lined the circuit.

The event would have been ideal for this time of the year and was backed by superb organisation on the day, but in the cold light of day, and with a fresh pair of eyes safety concerns were raised that could  not be overlooked.

We are sorry to all who made the journey down and to all who have missed out on what could have been a great days racing.

The league rankings will now be based on your seven best scores in ALL categories.

Three Events left in season
The Cyclefit London/South East Cyclo-Cross League has two events left to play out and we of course end with the wonderful Team Championships.

We do not race for two weeks firstly because the cross calendar is kept clear of events for the National Championships on January 10/11 and sadly we had to call off Round 13 because of a waterlogged venue. This means we next race at Redbridge on January 24 and then Brindsbury on January 31.

Both rounds 14 and 15 will see courses that will have been chosen and designed to avoid the big issue at this time – rain soaked earth! Redbridge will see a course that uses most of the hard standing tracks and Brindsbury have adopted a similar approach to this new venue on the League’s calendar.

Next races:
January 24 Round 14
January 31 Round 15
February 7 Team Championships

Round 13 – January 17: CANCELLED
Organisers Team Darenth recently made a site visit to the school at Wilmington and found large parts of the grounds either water logged or under standing water.

Clive of TD says: ‘With the weather forecast still for more rain we feel the situation will only get worse before it gets better.’

We therefore do not feel we can deliver a high quality, safe and enjoyable event, and most importantly leave the school grounds in a suitable condition post event.’ EVENT INFO

Merry Christmas
Dear all, so far we at London/SE Cross Command have had a good league with so many great races and many, many brilliant riders giving it their all. So enjoy Christmas (will there be a new bike under the tree?) and we rejoin the action in 2016!

Have a great Christmas!

December Cyclefit Prizes
Last time it was Julian’s ‘fickle finger of fate’ that decided who won the Cyclefit fits, but this time a lot more thought went into the selection.

36--660-365

Cyclefit have sized many riders from mere mortals to the gods and goddess of cycling; including the Trek Factory Team and Team Matrix featuring Fabian Cancellera and Laura Trott.

Three riders that Cyclefit and the London Cyclo-Cross League  believe have shown true cyclo-cross spirit by their determined racing, sociability and positive attitude win a 3D CycleFit.

The winners of the 3D CycleFit are:

Charlotte Heywood, Twickenham Cycles.
Mark Smith – Crawley Wheelers (Especially because of his comeback to racing after an awful injury).
Titouan Barthelmey – Dulwich Paragon.

The 3D Fit combines the latest hi-tech and the great expertise built up by JulianWall and the Cyclefit team for the last decade to analyse your position and movement on the bike.

Visit Cyclefit for full information regarding their services – http://cyclefit.co.uk/

For non-winners there are still great Cyclefit special offers available for London/South Cross League only riders – GO THERE

There will be more prize presentation before season end and maybe it could be you next time?

John’s Christmas Prize – 2014/15 Cyclo-Cross Annual
To celebrate Christmas John Mx awarded a prize to the rider in his view who has shown a real spirit of cyclo-cross and who has moved up a notch or two in his skills and speed.

titoaunbook2015

Titouan is presented with a copy of the Cyclo-Cross Annual by Phillip Jemmison, cross commissaire and BC SE Regional Secretary

He overcame mechanical problems when he broke his bike at Sumner Ponds but he remained wonderfully positive. That day he had to run to the line and just held off Kamran Amin by a whisker for second.

So to youth rider Titouan Barthelmy goes a copy of Balint Hamvas’ 2014/15 Cyclo-Cross Annual – this book is an excellent idea for Christmas! – GO SEE MORE ABOUT THE BOOK

No London/SE League this Weekend November 14/15
This was the weekend that the London Cyclo Cross Assoc. had kept clear for the Rapha SuperCross normally held at ‘Ally Pally’, but in a shift of tack this event is now an ‘urban cross’ that cannot be ratified by BC or the LCCA and this will now be held at Kings Cross on Saturday – http://pages.rapha.cc/cross/super-cross-uk

This enforced break in the London/South East League does allow us to have a weekend off and to get some house-keeping sorted out.

There is racing held under the auspice of the LCCA in East Kent – see below.

The London/SE League resumes on November 22 for round 9- GO THERE

Rider Conduct – Practice Laps
Dear all riders,

whilst so much of the time riders in the London and South East Cyclo-Cross League show courtesy and respect for others there is from time to time a need to remind all that some things cannot be accepted.

At recent races riders have begun to overstep the mark by undertaking a practice/sighting lap whilst a race is still on.

At round 8 at Penhurst this saw riders interfering with the youth race and we had riders crossing the line ahead of competitors who had yet to take the flag!

This CANNOT be allowed to happen again, at the next race any rider who does this will be noted down and subject to possible sanction. (Time penalties or expulsion etc.)

DO NOT ENTER THE COURSE UNTIL THE COMMISSAIRE’S SAY SO.

IF ALLOWED YOU MUST JOIN THE COURSE ONLY JUST AFTER THE START/FINISH AND YOU MUST LEAVE A HUGE GAP BETWEEN YOU AND ANY RIDER STILL RACING. (NO RIDING UP TO THEIR WHEEL)

Thanks and you will obey!

John mx (in ‘Death Star’ mode)

Message from the judging team
Thanks for your help in getting the timing system working well in recent weeks. There are a few things you can do to make it work at its best.

jugdes

1) Remember to scan your tag when you sign on. The system ONLY records tags that have been scanned into the entry list at the signon desk. Even if you have entered online, you need to scan your tag else the timing kit won’t pick it up and it will need to be typed in manually every time you go past.
2) Fit your tag to the TOP of your helmet. Not the sides, or the back, or your jersey pocket, and definitely not on your bike.
3) Wear your race number on the side that the judges are sitting. As the races are starting to get muddier, some are completely unreadable at the end. We need them as a backup in case of any problems with the timing system and to make sure the finish order is right.
4) If you forget to bring your number and/or tag one week, ask for an F-Number at signon, which we have provided for this precise purpose. Handwritten numbers are impossible to read as you flash past at 20mph.
5) Secure it. Several flappy numbers last Sunday! We’ll be very happy to give you more pins if you need them.

Pits
We would really appreciate it if all competitors and supporters show greater care to ensure that equipment is placed in a manner that allows free movement through the pit area/s. In addition when holding  a bike for a rider please make sure that you do not impede another.

We rely upon you to self police the pits rather than place the burden on already very busy commissaire’s.

East Kent Cyclo Cross League Round 1
Round 1 East Kent Cyclo Cross #SandwichTechCross  held on 13th September 2015

Robert Kingsland writes: Weather Bright and Sunny with Showers. Grass course with many dead turns and technical sections, 40cm planks and sand-pit, small off-camber banks The surface became greasy after shower during the Vets/Women’s race resulting challenging conditions

Riders chased for prizes including #StyleAward and #Prime at the end of the second lap. The event was well supported by Local Riders, which is the primary aim of the series, with a 4th race to be announced shortly, East Kent Cyclo Cross has started very well!

Rider of the day was clearly Jon Lyons GS Invicta who won the Vets V40 and then finished 5th in the Seniors

Thanks to Sandwich Technology School for allowing us to promote the event

Cyclefit head new sponsors for the 2015/16 season.

cyclefitlogo2015astradalogo2015yellowjerseylogo2015

The Cyclefit London and South East Cyclo Cross League supported by Strada Wheels and Yellow Jersey Cycle Insurance.

The London Cyclo Cross Assoc. welcome premium bike fitting company Cyclefit as the headline sponsor for the 2015/16 season. The League will also be supported by Strada Wheels and Yellow Jersey Cycle Insurance.

The addition of these excellent companies is a great bonus to the League and we hope that they will  add some extra magic to our cross season.

Watch out for special offers, goodie bags and extra prizes as they are announced during the season.

More information regarding our sponsors can be found here – http://www.londonxleague.co.uk/sponsors/

Online Entry Open at RiderHQ

We are pleased to announce that entries are now open for this year’s League.

You can see the full details about the League, including this year’s age categories and how to take part at www.londonxleague.co.uk/info
For U10 and U12 riders, there is no need to register nor to enter online – simply turn up at any of the events and pay £1. We generally advise arriving about an hour before your event to make sure you’ve had time to sign on and warm up.
For older riders, we strongly advise that you register for the series and enter each event in advance. Entering on the day involves longer queues and higher charges.
1. Register for the 2015/16 season at RiderHQ.com. This costs £10 and assigns you a number and electronic tag for the season. You will need to collect these at the first round that you enter, but after that, you need to remember to bring them to each event.
(There is no longer a need for clubs or individual riders to affiliate to the League. The only affiliated clubs are those that are promoting events during the season. Riders in these clubs will receive a £3 refund. Look out for the option to apply for this on the registration page)
2. Enter your first event. You can find a link to entries for each event on our website, or else from riderHQ.com/calendar
3. Race. Have fun.
4. Enter your next event.

London Summer Series
Three rounds of the London Summer Series have been held with excellent fields in all categories and the final round is to be held at Herne Hill Velodrome on Thursday August 14 – http://www.summerseries.co.uk/

A new season 2015/16

Welcome to a new season of cyclo cross and a very big welcome to Cyclefit as our new headline sponsor.

Many of you know that Cyclefit have been providing a premium bike fitting service for over ten years to the likes of you and me in addition to Fabian Cancellera, to name just one top line pro.

The 2015/16 Cyclefit London and South East Cyclo Cross League once again will be raced over 15 rounds with eight counting for the titles. New for 2014/15 is that we have ended affiliations and now all riders must simply register and this is one of many measures designed to stream line the online entry and the operation of our transponder timing system.

We welcome mountain bikes in addition to cross machines and although there is entry on the day for all categories we firmly advise you to pre-enter at RiderHQ.

We have lost two events from the 2014/15 season with the first being the round at Gunpowder Park in NE London, although this is a shame we can be pleased that the reason is that the promoting club London Phoenix will be hosting not only a round at Redbridge Cycle Centre but they will also host the prestigious Eastern and South East Regional Championships. So huge thanks to them.

Sadly the longest running event on the South East Calendar is no more, Gemini BC have hosted a post-Christmas Cross at Footscray for decades and have decided to call it a day. We thank them for their great support over the years,

Please check through the INFO page for all the changes to our online entry system and how to register.

Without wishing the summer (what summer you may ask?) away, I and probably you, are looking forward to September 6 and the first round of the Cyclefit London and South Cyclo Cross League.

201

We will miss Footscray but not the redtape required to use the venue.
